Once a week the Master Gardeners work with the second grade at Pungoteague Elementary School teaching gardening and science skills.

As you can see from the pictures, the children learn about flowers, vegetables, insects and worms.

From their smiles, you can tell they really enjoy the program!

Each class has its own garden bed where they plant and weed. They plant their own vegetable garden and have a salad party to celebrate their harvest (see photo below). The children also maintain a compost pile.

For Mother’s Day, there is a special project. The Master Gardeners donate plants and flowers for the project and the children make flower arrangements for their Moms in clay pots they made in art class.

Through many hands-on activities in the classroom and outside the children learn many new things.

They have a wonderful time as they work to earn the Green Thumb Award and

Salad Party
